Today, what I am going to share with all of you is “How to install AJAX On Machines Running Visual Studio 2005“.
To proceed further, make sure that you must have:
- Visual Studio 2005 installed on your system
- AjaxControlToolkit.zip file
If you do not have the AjaxControlToolkit.zip then you can download it from here. - ASP AJAX Extensions Setup
If you do not have the ASP AJAX Extensions Setup then you can download the setup named ASPAJAXExtSetup from here.
Follow the following steps to install AJAX:
- Unzip the AjaxControlToolkit.zip file.
- After unzipping the file, place the folder AjaxControlToolkit at “DRIVE:\Program Files ” where DRIVE can be C, D, E, etc. There will be a folder AjaxControlExtender under AjaxControlToolkit. In this folder, there will be file named AjaxControlExtender.vsi. Run this file.
- Run the setup of ASPAJAXExtSetup
Now AJAX has been installed on your system.
Now open up Visual Studio 2005 and create a New Website. While creating a website, you have to select ASP.Net AJAX-Enabled Web Site.
To make the AJAX controls available in the Toolbox of Visual Studio 2005, follow the following steps:
- Right click on Toolbox and click Add Tab, if you want to add AJAX Controls in separate tab. Otherwise click Choose Items and then click Browse.
- After then select “DRIVE:\Program Files\AjaxControlToolkit\SampleWebSite\Bin\AjaxControlToolkit.dll“. Now you will notice Accordion, AccordionPane and other AJAX Controls in the .Net Framework Components.
- Check those controls and click OK.
Now you can see the AJAX Controls in the Toolbox.
Happy coding.

Great, but …
I need to use the accordion control which does not work in version 1 (the control just will not function properly in designview). How can I install and use AjaxControlToolkit for ASP.NET 3.5 – with Visual Studio 2005 – in a Windows 2000 environment.
Thx

Well done man great job.
Can you also write something how to interact with database using ajax.
Like just tell how to add/edit/delete record using ajax and sqlserver.
If you also let us know about it it will be great help from your side.
Thanks in advance

The tutorial does not explain where to find “ASPAJAXExtSetup”, I have looked in the ASPControlToolKit directory but I cannot find it there.
If I skip this step then I get an error when i try to add the AjaxControlToolkit.dll to the toolbar in VS2005, it says:
“the system cannot find the file specified”
August 7, 2011 at 4:15 pm |
OK, I have fixed the problem. I needed to download the AJAX Extensions Set-up which is a separate download from the toolkit. The link in the article does not work, it just takes you to a an empty page of advertisements. But you can download it from microsoft here:

I am getting this error when I try to run in debug (or compile).
The base class includes the field ‘ScriptManager1’, but its type (System.Web.UI.ScriptManager) is not compatible with the type of control (System.Web.UI.ScriptManager).
Any ideas please? I’m thinking I need a newer assembly of System.Web maybe? I’m running VS.NET 2005 and AJAX 3.5
